My name is John, and I have lived in Alaska since 2009. I have hunted across four different continents and many states. My experiences include a handful of guided hunts, some of which were great, while others turned out to be a complete quagmire where I could have been (or was) more successful if I had chosen to go DIY. Most of my hunting has been DIY, which is how I prefer to hunt for several reasons: lower cost, more enjoyment, the freedom to hunt with those I choose, and a greater sense of reward. My true passion is waterfowl hunting, and harvesting all the species in North America is a lifetime goal of mine. When the opportunity to move to Kodiak arose, I jumped at it, having heard about the incredible sea duck hunting in Kodiak. To say that it has exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. In my opinion, there is very little pressure around Kodiak, providing ample opportunities for hunters to pursue and harvest lifetime birds. I also believe that the primary hurdle for those interested in waterfowl hunting sea ducks on Kodiak is the cost of a guided hunt and/or the logistics of transporting the necessary gear—like boats, motors, and decoys—to and from Kodiak. This inspired me to start Kodiak DIY, offering fellow hunters an option for Kodiak boat and decoy rentals that wasn't available before.
